Review:
The final recording by the second version of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers features trumpeter Bill Hardman, tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin, either Junior Mance or Sam Dockery on piano and bassist Spanky DeBrest along with leader/drummer Blakey performing four group originals, two Jimmy Heath compositions and the obscure 'Late Spring.' Although this was not the most famous edition of The Messengers, it set a standard that its successors would uphold to, training its members to be bandleaders in their own right. The music on this album is typical hard bop of the period, well played and full of enthusiasm and fire. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Review:
This carefully considered compilation of John Coltrane's early music is simply the best. For any new listener this is the first stop on the Coltrane. His improvisation on Mal Waldron's Soul Eyes is hauntingly beautiful and remains within the memory long after the music has gone. Although his path in later years moved into less structered forms of improvisation this compilation is outstanding. If you want to buy your first John Coltrane album look no further. He was one of the greatest saxophonists of all time and his essence is captured here

Miles DAVIS with Sonny STITT - 1960 Olympia Oct. 11

Product Details:
Audio CD (August 19, 2002)
Original Release Date: October 13, 1960
Number of Discs: 2
Format: Import
Label: Dragon

Review:
On page 249 of the autobiography, Miles recounts driving around Philly with Jimmy Heath, recalling that he 'probably was complaining to him about Sonny Stitt playing the wrong [stuff] on 'So What,' because he would always [mess] up on that tune.' The marvel is that Miles called on Sonny to replace Coltrane in the first place. But Wayne Shorter wanted to stay on with Art Blakey, so the most complete and polished bebop player of them all, a saxophonist embodying, but not extending beyond, the previous tradition took the coveted chair. Until these recordings came to light--of a 1960 Paris concert in October (there's an earlier Paris date the same year, only with Coltrane)--it was assumed the Stitt edition of Miles' group had never been recorded. So now we know what Miles was talking about. Sonny's musical style--about melodic 'formulas' and rythmic/harmonic 'closure'--is clearly 'wrong' for Miles, but not necessarily for Sonny. On all of the tunes, including the modal 'So What,' Sonny 'locks' into the time, much like a Coleman Hawkins, and plays within the harmonies of the tune, coming back to the tonic note at every opportunity. Miles if anything overplays, as though he's determined to rub Sonny's nose in the new music until he gets it. Sonny will have none of it. He counter-punches with his very best shots, exhausting the melodic/harmonic vocabulary inherited from Bird and Diz. The result is a dazzling display of disparate pyrotechnics--perhaps the last time Miles would play this aggressively on record. For my money, this quintet is more exciting, perhaps even breath-taking, than the Shorter-Hancock-Carter-Williams unit that would soon succeed it. A few caveats: there's considerable audio distortion, especially of the trumpet. And of course this is not an album for anyone who is just beginning a Miles collection. But for certain saxophonists I know and perhaps careful listeners who are knowledgeable about styles and traditions, this rare album will be an endlessly fascinating if not essential addition to a vital jazz collection.

Joe HENDERSON - The Blue Note Years (1993, 4CD's)

Product Details:

Cd Release Date: 1993
Recording Time: 277:07
Producers: Kazunori Sugiyama, Stanley Crouch, Michael Cuscuna, Sonny Lester, Duke Pearson & Renee Rosnes

Review:
Unlike many other box sets currently available, this four-CD package is actually a sampler taken from Joe Henderson's many recordings for Blue Note; all but three selections date from 1963-69. Out of the 36 selections, 26 feature the great tenor as a sideman and some are from sessions not reissued in quite awhile. Henderson is instantly recognizable (his distinctive tone has not changed much since 1963) and an asset to each of these performances. Also included in the box is a very attractive 40-page booklet that is highlighted by his complete Blue Note discography. This set is particularly recommended to listeners only vaugely aware of Joe Henderson's powerful music.

Review:
This remarkable concert at the Paris Olympia in March 1960 features the same quintet that recorded 'Freddie Freeloader' on Miles Davis's classic album 'Kind of Blue' a year or so earlier but they sound very different here. John Coltrane was reluctant to be part of this European tour and was anxious to leave Miles and start his own band. Despite this he's in absolutely blistering form although some members of the audience are clearly perturbed by the intensity of his playing. The recording quality is excellent and it's a mystery why this concert hasn't received more attention. This marvellous double CD is essential listening for all Miles & Coltrane fans and anyone who appreciates intense modern jazz.

Review:
This is a true classic. Composer/pianist George Russell gathered together a very versatile group of talents (trumpeter Don Ellis, trombonist Dave Baker, Eric Dolphy on alto and bass clarinet, bassist Steve Swallow, and drummer Joe Hunt) to explore three of his originals, ''Round Midnight' (which is given an extraordinary treatment by Dolphy), Miles Davis' 'Nardis,' and David Baker's 'Honesty.' The music is post-bop and although using ideas from avant-garde jazz, it does not fall into any simple category. The improvising is at a very high level and the frameworks (which include free and stop-time sections) really inspire the players. Highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide.

Cd Issue date: Jul 24, 2002
Running Time: 52:49

Review:
Although not one of his better known albums, Lee Morgan's EXPOOBIDENT is a strong outing in the still-early stages of the trumpeter's career. The oddly titled session, originally recorded for the Vee Jay label, is an excellent showcase for Morgan's developing style as one of the premier hard bop trumpeters. Also on the date are other heavy-duty boppers like the big-toned tenor man Clifford Jordan, bassist Art Davis, the great Art Blakey on drums, and the underrated pianist Eddie Higgins. The young Morgan is the central figure, however, and smartly displays his wares in swinging fashion. Morgan sports a tighter focus to his approach on this date, reigning in his usual over-the-top blowing reserved for Blakey's Jazz Messenger sessions. His soloing is melodic, crisp, and neatly controlled for the most part. This makes for some shining passages that clearly illustrate the trumpeter's major contribution to the hard bop genre. From his driving, speech-like punches and drawls on swingers like bluesy 'Triple Track' to his Miles Davis-ish muted whisper on the classic 'Just In Time,' Morgan presents a wide range of expression like only he could. Also included in this edition are four bonus alternate takes that are of equal value.

Horace SILVER Quintet & Trio - Blowin' The Blues Away (1959)

Review:
Besides the wildly popular SONG FOR MY FATHER, the second most acclaimed Horace Silver disc is the endlessly enjoyable BLOWIN' THE BLUES AWAY. This 1959 Blue Note date features the pianist in full stride with a quintet that includes trumpeter Blue Mitchell and saxophonist Junior Cook, two fellow proponents of funky hard bop. The gospel and R&B influence in Silver's approach is evident as finger-snapping grooves support bouncing melodies that bubble and pop with every chorus. As the title suggests, this music is a celebratory fanfare that washes away the hardships of everyday life. The explosive title track opens the session with a bang as the group burns through the changes with tight precision and plenty of spirit. The jazzier 'The St. Vitus Dance' is a swinging trio cut with hints of an Ellington influence among the bopping lines of Silver's solo. The most well known tunes here are the lush ballad 'Peace,' featuring outstanding work by Mitchell, and the classic 'Sister Sadie,' one of the most recorded Silver compositions in the jazz repertoire. Other highlights of this exemplary session are the bebop-flavored 'Break City' and the aptly titled ballad 'Melancholy Mood.'

Horace Silver: piano
Junior Cook: tenor saxophone
Blue Mitchell: trumpet
Eugene Taylor: bass
Louis Hayes: drums
